This year, our whole school theme is Roots and Wings. We want every child to feel deeply connected and grounded—knowing who they are, where they belong, and the values that guide them. These are their roots: the sense of security, heritage, and community that helps them grow strong.
At the same time, we want to give our children wings: the confidence, curiosity, and creativity to explore new ideas, embrace challenges, and take responsibility for themselves and the wider world.
Throughout the year, children will see this theme woven into assemblies, classroom learning, and special projects—encouraging them to care for our planet, celebrate their uniqueness, and reach for their potential.
Together, with your support, we’ll help every child grow with both roots to ground them and wings to let them fly.
As part of Roots and Wings, we are developing and upgrading our indoor and outdoor learning environments so that the children are fully able to utilise all the amazing learning spaces that we have here at Underhill!

This year at Underhill are continuing to work with the GROW at TTA and have lots of exciting plans to develop our very kitchen garden so that all the children will have the opportunity to learn about growing a wide variety of fruit and vegetables.

Our Kitchen Garden will be situated behind the canteen. Watch this space to see how we transform the area!
We will be fundraising to purchase equipment and resources, and if anyone with green fingers is interesting in helping out, that would be great!

This year a group of our Year 4 children will be visiting the GROW farm at TTA to learn lots of different skills and to help out with jobs on the farm. It's going to be an exciting year!
These children alongside our Y6 children, who went to the farm last year, will be our Mini-GROW ambassadors and support the development of our kitchen garden!

This year Underhill has been invited to part of the RHS Nature Park Garden initiative. This is where school children in England are invited to play a part in improving biodiversity and taking action to address climate change, through a government-funded programme known as the National Education Nature Park.
The programme brings nurseries, schools and colleges together to create one vast nature park, tracking and increasing biodiversity across England.
We are really excited to be part of this project!

As part of the project, our Eco-Warriors and Gardening Club members will be carrying out lots of different tasks to find out more about the different habitats around Underhill and areas that we can develop to improve biodiversity. The rest of the children will also be taking part in activities to plan and share their ideas.
This year we will be looking at how we can turn our grey areas to green. Watch this space to find out what the children have been up to!

On Friday 17th October, all the children at Underhill spent the afternoon investigating and mapping habitats in the school grounds and then planning how we can increase biodiversity. They drew up some great plans for turning some of our grey spaces into Pollinator Power gardens!

Last year, we were successful in applying for a grant from the Hyde Foundation to renovate the library. The builders will be arriving soon and this empty classroom will be transformed!
