In Reception this week we have been looking at ourselves in the mirror and then using skin toned paint sticks to create our own self portraits. We are discovering that we all look very different but that we are all very special!
09.10.26 Gingerbread Man came to nursery!
This week, we have been reading The Gingerbread Man. The children particularly enjoyed the part of the story where the fox eats the Gingerbread Man. This led us to wonder: Why can’t the Gingerbread Man go into the water? The children shared their ideas. One child said, “Because he will get soggy,” while another thought, “He might melt.” To investigate their ideas, we each had a gingerbread biscuit to explore using our senses. We smelt it, touched it and tasted it, describing what we noticed. We then used pipettes to carefully add water to our biscuits. We noticed that we needed to add lots of water because it was quickly being absorbed into the biscuit. We continued adding water and watching carefully until the biscuits became very soggy. Eventually, they became so wet that they disintegrated and fell apart. The children really enjoyed this hands-on investigation and were able to see for themselves what happens to a gingerbread biscuit when it is exposed to water. This helped us understand why the Gingerbread Man might not want to jump into the river!

In Reception this week our story of the week is Peace at Last by Jill Murphy.
We have been making our own story puppets to help us re-tell the story which is about a bear who can’t get to sleep! The children were really motivated to draw their own characters and to join in with the repetitive story language.
Stories are a key way that we learn in Reception and we really like this one!

Our nursery children enjoyed tasting a variety of lovely homemade breads from different countries. They explored the different textures, smells and flavours, noticing how each bread was unique. The children used their senses to investigate and compare the breads, sharing their thoughts and describing what they liked.
This activity encouraged sensory exploration, curiosity and an appreciation of different cultures and foods.

In Blossom this week the children have been practicing reading and writing some tricky words. They have been investigating what is in the box and had some fun with a sensory circuit at the end of the week.

What a great week we have had in Year 1! The children are becoming more settled into their new routines and have been working incredibly hard. It has been wonderful to see their confidence growing as they take part in some amazing learning.
In English, we have been reading The Girl at the Front of the Class. We have been exploring the characters and using similes to write descriptive sentences. The children have enjoyed thinking carefully about how we can use interesting language to bring our descriptions to life.
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of number and exploring the different ways we can represent and make numbers. The children have been enjoying using practical resources and sharing their ideas about numbers in different ways.
We are so proud of how well everyone has settled into Year 1 and all the fantastic learning they have achieved this week. Well done, Year 1!

This week in year 2, we have been working hard to develop our writing skills by using expanded noun phrases. We have been thinking of some amazing descriptions for a rapid, rushing river!
In art, we ventured outside to see what textures we could create with crayons and paper. Our mosaic on the wall created the most incredible pattern

It has been a fantastic week of learning in Year 1!
English:We have been reading the wonderful story of Rapunzeland have written some amazing descriptive sentences. We have been developing our vocabulary and using exciting adjectives to bring our writing to life.
Maths: We have been exploring addition and looking at number families within 10. The children have been working hard to understand how numbers can be combined in different ways.
History:We were lucky to hear from some of our parents and grandparents about how they celebrated their birthdays when they were younger. We enjoyed listening to their memories and comparing their experiences with how we celebrate birthdays today. It was a lovely opportunity to explore how celebrations have changed over time.

This week, we have been rewriting the traditional tale of Rapunzel. The children have been developing their storytelling skills and using their ideas to retell the story in their own words.
In Maths, we have been exploring subtraction. We have practised using different methods to solve subtraction problems, including crossing out objects and using number lines to help us find the answers.
In Science, we have been learning about weather forecasts and exploring how the weather changes across the different seasons. The children have been thinking about the types of weather we might experience throughout the year.

In Year 2 this week, we have been thinking about what makes us proud for our Black History Month celebrations, as well as learning all about Claudia Jones and how she created Notting Hill Carnival.
We were also lucky enough to experience an immersive performance of Japanese origami. It was amazing to watch, and we even got to throw mountains of paper all over the hall (we did help to clean up after!).

Year 3 have an amazing opportunity to learn the ukulele for 10 weeks every Friday with music teacher, Rastko, from BEAT. There will be another update when they reach the end of their music lessons. Watch this space!

On Tuesday 6th October, Year 3 had the opportunity to participate in a drama workshop about superheroes. They had to show their best superheroes moves and create freeze frames in small groups based on a scenario. For example: a superhero saving a cat from a building!

Last week, our Year 4 children had the exciting opportunity to take part in a virtual space Zoom hosted by STEM with Wings, live from Imperial Space School. The children heard from NASA engineers Howard Hu and Branelle Rodriguez, who shared the incredible story of Artemis II and the team behind the Orion spacecraft.
They learnt about Orion’s 10-day mission around the Moon, including its journey around the far side of the Moon in a figure-of-eight pattern. The children were fascinated to discover that the crew travelled an incredible 270,000 miles from Earth which is farther than any human had travelled since the Apollo missions. It was a fantastic opportunity for our children to hear directly from NASA engineers and learn more about the people and technology behind this historic mission.

The children have been busy editing and publishing their stories inspired by Leon and the Place Between. Our writing outcome was a portal narrative, where a character is transported from their familiar, everyday world into a completely new and magical one.
Throughout the writing process, the children have worked hard to develop their descriptive language, carefully choosing words and phrases to bring their magical worlds to life and engage their readers.
They have thoroughly enjoyed creating their own magical worlds, and we have been so impressed by their creativity and imagination. It has been wonderful to see their ideas develop into exciting and imaginative stories!

This week, Year 4 have been celebrating Black History Month by learning about inspirational Black individuals throughout history and exploring the challenges, barriers and discrimination they have faced and overcome. We discovered how these remarkable people have made significant contributions to society and helped to shape the world we live in today. As part of our learning, we created vibrant and meaningful collages showcasing famous Black figures from the past to the present, celebrating their achievements, influence and lasting legacies. We carefully selected key words such as hope, dreams, courage and strength to represent the qualities these individuals demonstrated in the face of adversity. Through our artwork, we reflected on the importance of perseverance, equality and standing up for what is right, recognising how one person's determination and bravery can inspire generations to come. We are proud of the thoughtful discussions, creativity and respect Year 4 have shown throughout this important learning experience.

Year 3 have worked so hard this half term to produce two pieces of writing about the Iron Man. One was their own narrative of the first chapter of the book and the second was their own trap explanation of how to trap the Iron Man! Well done for thinking so creatively!

It has been lovely start for Year 5. We have been busy settling back into school routines - including some fantastic singing in our singing assembly. The children have particularly enjoyed taking part in a range of settling-in activities, giving them the opportunity to reconnect with friends, get to know their new routines and share their interests. We have also been impressed with the creativity shown in their self-portraits, which have made a fantastic start to their new Art books.

This week in year 5 we have been learning about Viking trade routes and we become Viking traders practicing negotiation and persuasion. We have been busy doing some fantastic writing about Mars Rover's journey to Mars. The children have written some wonderful expanded noun phrases within their writing. In art we have been carving our lino (foam) blocks with a memory ready for printing next week - we can't wait to share the results. With the start of Black History Month we have been discussing the importance of community and the children wrote some profound and meaningful responses to the importance of solidarity, representation and belonging.

Last week we proudly added our writing to the writing wall - the children did amazing showing off their handwriting. We have been continuing our learning in Black History Month discussing achievements and significance of different Black British figures as well as using language to challenge stereotypes and celebrate representation. We have also finished out Art unit and have made some lovely prints.
18.09.26 Year 6 house captains
The new Year 6s have started strong as excellent role models. Not only have they been making a good effort to show their best around the school, but many of them also stood for election as House Captain.
Everyone wrote a speech about why they would be a good leader and then carefully thought about whether they wanted to take on the role and put themselves forward.
It was great to see so many being confident, standing up in front of the members of their house from across the school and seeking election. After some very secret voting across the school, our new house captains were chosen and Mrs Reed presented them with their very special House Captain badges.

02.10.26 Year 6 trip to RAF Museum
The first trip of the year happened on the 22nd of September when Year 6 visited the RAF Museum in Colindale. Their behaviour was exemplary and we received compliments from the staff at the museum who appreciated how well the children listened and moved around the museum. The trip allowed the children to see some of the important aeroplanes from World War Two, particularly from The Battle of Britain. We were met at the museum by a volunteer who made sure we knew where to find everything and then we were free to move around at our leisure. We had a great time looking at the planes and other vehicles at the museum and also enjoyed playing on the interactives, learning a little more about how missions are managed and run. The children also had fun dressing up in the replica uniforms - they really looked the part! We also managed to catch one of the tour guides on a break and persuaded him to answer lots of questions! It was a great day and Year 6 really made Underhill proud.

02.10.26 Year 6 trip to RAF Museum
Both Year 6 classes have been busy over the last fortnight, creating and rehearsing their class assemblies. Both classes chose to perform assemblies about World War Two which so much of our curriculum has been based on this term.
6 Hawthorn performed an excellent assembly about what it was like to be a child in the war. Did you know that children were 'evacuated'? This means they were moved from their homes in the towns and cities so they didn't get 'bombed out'. Sadly, these children didn't all have good experiences. Many went to strangers and missed out on lots of schooling.
6 Elm chose to create their assembly about the book our English work has been based on this half term: Rose Blanche. It is a poignant book with wonderful pictures. Rose Blanche is a young German girl who wonders why lorries full of people are being secretly driven through her town into the forbidden woods. She follows one day and finds a camp full of innocent, imprisoned people - victims of hatred. She does what she can to help them - secretly - but pays the ultimate price for her kindness.
Both classes performed with great confidence, showing just how much they have learned about this area of study.
